Vital Farms posts Q2 2026 net loss of $31.1 million on a 10.1% revenue decline as industry-wide egg oversupply collapses gross margin to 6.6% from 38.9%

Vital Farms' Q2 2026 results mark the sharpest margin compression in the company's public history, with gross margin collapsing from 38.9% to 6.6% year-over-year as industry-wide shell egg oversupply forced $19.5 million in excess breaker sales at distressed pricing and triggered a $7.8 million butter business exit charge. Management secured a new $185 million credit facility package — a $125 million term loan and $60 million ABL — to provide liquidity runway, while simultaneously terminating its stock repurchase program and breaching its Fixed Charge Coverage Ratio covenant on the prior facility. Full-year guidance of $775–$800 million net revenue and $0–$10 million Adjusted EBITDA is reiterated, contingent on supply-demand rebalancing and retail channel mix recovery in the second half.

Vital Farms' aspiration is to become America's most trusted food company. Every day, we aim to raise the standards in the food industry and disrupt industrial, factory food norms. Our eggs and butter are sourced through a distributed supply chain of small farms that uphold our high animal welfare standards and produce exceptional products. We believe this approach creates a more resilient business that has enabled us to continue growing through a dynamic chapter in our industry. Our purpose is to improve the lives of people, animals and the planet through food. We are committed to Conscious Capitalism, which prioritizes positive, long-term outcomes for all of our stakeholders — farmers and suppliers, customers and consumers, communities and the environment, employees, who we refer to as crew members, and stockholders. Vital Farms was founded in 2007 on a 27-acre plot of land in Austin, Texas. Starting with a small flock of hens, we maintained a strong belief that a varied diet and better animal welfare practices would lead to superior eggs. Our first sales came from farmers markets and restaurants around Austin and, less than a year later, our eggs were discovered by Whole Foods Market, Inc. We have built our business through our strong relationships with family farms and deliberate efforts to design and build the infrastructure to bring our products to a national audience. Today, with a network of more than 600 small farms, we believe we have set the national standard for pasture-raised eggs. Our 'accelerator farms' project, launched in 2024, envisions a small number of farms that we own and operate, where we can implement innovative farming practices that can be scaled to the family farms in our network. We began placing birds on accelerator farms in 2025. We have increased net revenue from $260.9 million in fiscal 2021 to $759.4 million in fiscal 2025, which represents a 30.6% compounded annual growth rate.
